What Is The Best Time To Go Scuba Diving In Bermuda?

As mentioned earlier, you can expect fairly good weather all year round on the island of Bermuda.

During the winter months, you can expect about 720F weather and the water goes to about 620F. This is pretty decent considering it’s still freezing in other parts of the U.S.A.

Another reason to visit Bermuda during the low seasons during late winter and early spring is that you get to enjoy personalized guidance from the diving instructors. Since there are few to no tourists you can enjoy a personalized diving experience.

However, the best and peak months to visit Bermuda are from May to October. During this high season, you can expect sunny days perfect for water activities such as swimming and snorkeling.

Expect temperatures between 680F (170C) to 840F (280C) this is warm and perfect for scuba diving too.

The water is very calm but you can expect some low tides and wind every now and then.

Generally, you can plan a scuba diving trip on Bermuda island from late winter to early fall. Just keep in mind during the high season, you’ll interact with many more divers and may need to book your accommodation in advance.

Are There Sharks In The Bermuda Triangle?

Yes, there are sharks in the Bermuda triangle. Some of the shark species found in the triangle include whale sharks, cookie-cutter sharks, hammerhead sharks, great white sharks, and tiger sharks.

On Bermuda Island, some shark species to expect include Dusky sharks and Galapagos sharks. Both species are quite harmless and rarely attack scuba divers.

Most shark species are found deep underwater and will move around making it hard to spot them while scuba diving.

According to marine biologists, the most dangerous predator shark species in the Bermuda triangle are the cookie-cutter sharks. These sharks pose a danger to larger predators such as whale sharks. Luckily these vicious sharks are found very deep underwater in the trenches of the Bermuda triangle.

Marine biologists found the sharks to reside at over 3000 ft. underwater during the day. They’ll only come up to about 2000 ft. at night to hunt for food.

The sharks are pretty small in size compared to other sharks and pose a great danger to other predators in water by attacking and biting them.  Basically, the shark lives like a parasite feeding on large predators by biting off pieces of their flesh.

While among the most dangerous shark species, it’s rare for scuba dives to encounter them due to the extremely deep depths they live in.

With that in mind, it’s still important to keep an eye out for them, especially if night diving. Always remember even harmless marine life can attack when triggered.

Best Diving Site in Bermuda for Beginners

Are you a beginner looking for a wreck to dive in while in Bermuda? The Hermes wreck is ideal for beginners due to its accessibility and ease of navigation.

The wreck can be accessed from the island of Bermuda; dives have to take a short 20-minute boat ride to the dive site.

Due to the crystal clear waters, you can actually see the wreck as you start descending towards it. Located at 80 ft. underwater the wreck has been anchored into the sea bed and also serves as a reef where corrals grow.

The ship experienced engine challenges in 1983 preventing the ship from arriving at its intended destination of Cape Verde Island, the ship was abandoned in Bermuda. Many months passed without any repairs due to a lack of funds, and the ship now owned by the Bermuda government was sold to the Bermuda Dive association.

After necessary preparations for intentional sinking, the ship was sunk in 1984 near Horseshoe Bay making it a permanent reef on the sea bed.

Since it wasn’t a very big ship, divers can actually see the entire wreck from above and can explore it entirely in a short time.

This wreck is particularly ideal for beginners due to its location, size, and ease of maneuvering. It’s easy for divers to swim through the ship, and explore the engine room which is still pretty much intact.

Due to its location underwater, natural light from the sun easily penetrates into the wreck. Divers may however need to carry diving lights to explore some parts of the wreck.

Surrounding the wreck are extensive coral reefs for exploration. The coral species in the Bermuda triangle aren’t very diverse but thriving.

This can be attributed to the anchoring spots being far away from the actual dive spot. This helps protect the corals since anchoring directly into them damages and eventually kills them.

Why Does Bermuda Have So Many Shipwrecks?

Wrecks on Bermuda island date back to the 1800s. While some sunk after colliding into the extensive reefs, other ships met their unplanned destinations after colliding with sunken wrecks. Lastly, some shipwrecks were intentionally sunk as seen in the case of the Hermes wreck.

The Bermuda Triangle is known to have extensive reefs, steep drops, and deep trenches. Some wrecks sunk during the civil war while others date back to World War II.

If you believe in the urban legend of mysterious forces at the Bermuda Triangle, then a few wrecks can be attributed to these circumstances.

While it’s one of the wreck capitals of the world, the Bermuda triangle is likely to be home to many more wrecks yet to be discovered and explored.
